tutorial
for help on how to participate in this presentation
and
how to use the MOO tool

KCCMO`O at Kapi`olani Community College, can be used to display a synchronous slide show during the discussion.

Technical requirement:

  • Java plug-in needs to be installed on the browser used to connect to the presentation.

  • Your monitor size has to have a minimum of supported mode of 600x800 although 1024x768 is highly recommanded. If your monitor setting is set to 640x480, you WILL experience display problems to which nothing can be done at this point.

  • Practice your Connection: Especially if MOO environment is new to you, we strongly suggest that you try to connect BEFORE you present a slide show in order to be comfortable with the interface.
Point your browser to this URL and login as a guest. If you would like to request an account, please send an email to hErVe.
A new window will appear and should look like the following:

The dot indicate the area where you will be able to control the slide display.
The dot indicates the area where the slide contents will be displayed.
The dot indicate the area where you will be able to see the Real-time discussion during the slide show.
The dot indicates the area where you can type in order to participate to the discussion.

The first thing that you want to do is to type the name you want to be known as during the session. If you look at the bottom of area GREEN, you will notice that this is the first question the MOO is asking you when you connect.
Type your name in the RED area, and press ENTER.

In some browsers, the time for the lower left frame (java applet) to load might take up to 3 or 4 seconds after the other frames. We also suggest that once the applet is loaded, you maximise your window.

Once you press enter you will be automatically at the right place for the discussion, and will be ready to interact with other people. They are 2 basic ways to interact: a PUBLIC and a PRIVATE method.
  • PUBLIC Interaction:
*Use the quotes before your text when you want to speak.
    Example:
"hi there, I'm here for your conference! You do not need to close the quote at the end of your sentence, but you DO need to start with one.
*When you use this method of interaction, be aware that EVERYONE will be able to see what you just typed.
In the above example, when you press ENTER after the word conference!, the MOO will display a confirmation to you as You say: hi there, I'm here for the conference! while everybody else in the room will see Guest_Kahuna says: hi there, I'm here for the conference! (assuming that you are Guest_kahuna).
  • PRIVATE Interaction:
This method allows you to interact with another person without other people to be aware of it. The syntax is as follow: (assuming that you would like to speak with Guest_Ono) page Guest_Ono this is a private message between you and me. In this method, type the word: page followed by a space, the name of the player you would like to talk to, another space, and your text
When you use this method of interaction, only you and the person you are talking to will see the content of your page. Note that when you page, you do not have to use quotation marks like in the public interaction method.
When you either attempt to use the public or the private method of interaction, and upon validating your text (pressing ENTER), the system answers with: I don't understand that It means that something is wrong with the syntax, and that your text didn't get through; any other feedback message (which might depends on the person you are talking to - yes:) means that the command was successful.

This is not the place for an "in-depth" MOO tutorial. If you would like to learn more about the MOO environment and useful commands, refer to the MOO documentation available on the Internet. A good place to start is KCCMO`O help page.
